LTC Jeffrey B. Van Sickle (Jeff)

Director of European Affairs

Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Van Sickle is the director of European affairs in the Strategic Studies Institute at the US Army War College. He received his commission as an Infantry officer from the US Military Academy in 2000, transitioned to Special Forces in 2005, and became a foreign area officer (48E – Europe) in 2008.

Prior to his arrival at Carlisle Barracks, he was assigned to US European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, where he served as the Western Europe branch chief in the J5/8 Directorate. As a foreign area officer, Lieutenant Colonel Van Sickle has been an instructor of French in the Department of Foreign Languages at the US Military Academy; an in-region trainee at the US Embassy-Paris, France; and chief, Office of Defense Cooperation at the US Embassy-Skopje, North Macedonia.

Previous company-grade assignments included: detachment commander and future operations officer, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, where he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and to Mali in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Trans-Sahel; and rifle platoon leader, battalion mortar platoon leader, and long-range surveillance detachment executive officer in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, where he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Lieutenant Colonel Van Sickle holds a Master of Arts degree in European Studies from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Science degree in French and Spanish from the US Military Academy. He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Infantry Mortar Leader Course, Airborne School, Ranger School, the Special Forces Qualification Course, the Military Freefall Basic Course, the Security Cooperation Management Overseas Course, and the Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2), the Meritorious Service Medal (2), the Army Commendation Medal (5), the Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2) and GWOT Expeditionary and Service Medals, the Parachutist and Military Freefall Badges, the Ranger and Special Forces Tabs, and the Combat and Expert Infantryman Badges.

Lieutenant Colonel Van Sickle has been married to his wife Amy since 2006 and they have three children: Luke (2012), Vivienne (2014), and Jude (2015).
