Dr. Azeem Ibrahim

Dr Azeem Ibrahim is an Adjunct Research Professor at the Strategic Studies Institute and a Director at the Center for Global Policy in Washington, DC. He completed fellowships at the universities of Oxford, Harvard, and Yale after receiving his PhD from the University of Cambridge.

Dr Ibrahim is the author of “The Rohingyas: Inside Myanmar’s Hidden Genocide”, (Hurst & OUP, 2016) and “Radical Origins: Why We Are Losing the War Against Islamic Extremism” (Pegasus New York, 2017).

He has met and advised a number of world leaders and governments on a diverse range of issues from financial investment, geopolitics, and countering extremism. He served as a reservist in the United Kingdom’s 4th Battalion Parachute Regiment.

    The Syrian civil war has allowed al-Qaeda to recover from its setbacks up to 2010. Syria has also seen a civil war between two al-Qaeda inspired factions (Al Nusrah and the Iraq based Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) and indicates there are limits to its ability to cooperate with other anti-Assad factions and gain popular appeal.
