Colonel Douglas V. Mastriano

COLONEL (COL) DOUGLAS V. MASTRIANO, Ph.D., began his career along the Iron Curtain in Germany. Here, he witnessed the end of the Cold War, deployed to Desert Storm with the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment, and subsequently served in tactical, operational, and strategic assignments that included the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Land Headquarters (Heidelberg, Germany), and with the Army Staff in the Pentagon. A graduate of Eastern University, COL Mastriano was commissioned an officer in 1986, and later earned his Masters in Strategic Intelligence (1992), Airpower Theory (2001), Military Operational Art and Science (2002), and Strategic Studies (2010), as well as a doctorate in history from the University of New Brunswick, Canada (2013). A veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, COL Mastriano is the author of the acclaimed and award-winning book, Alvin York: A New Biography of the Hero of the Argonne. COL Mastriano has supported six operational level exercises in the Baltics, published numerous articles on Baltic security, and led two major studies on the emerging Russian strategy of ambiguity. He teaches strategy and operational art at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
