Colonel Eric Hartunian, Director of SRAD & Outreach

Colonel Hartunian enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1993 as an Intelligence Analyst. After completing ROTC at New Mexico Military Institute, he was commissioned as a Field Artillery Officer in the Louisiana National Guard. Upon earning a bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1997 from Louisiana State University, he entered active duty at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for the Field Artillery Officer’s Basic Course.

After leaving the Basic Course, Colonel Hartunian was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 11th Field Artillery at Fort Wainwright, Alaska where he served in various roles including Fire Support Officer, Fire Direction Officer, and Personnel Officer. He then moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma where he completed the Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course, and commanded both a One Station Unit Training Battery, and an Advanced Individual Training Battery. During this time, he also completed his first master’s degree from Webster University. Colonel Hartunian deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Border Transition Team Advisor for 12 months before being selected to attend the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. After earning his second master’s degree in Defense Analysis, he transitioned to the Army Strategist (FA59) career field and attended the Command and General Staff College and the Basic Strategic Arts Program. His next assignment was to Fort Campbell, Kentucky as the Chief of Plans for the 101st Airborne Division, where he deployed to Afghanistan as part of Combined Joint Task Force-101 and served as the Deputy Director of Plans for Regional Command-East.

Colonel Hartunian’s next assignment was to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas as an instructor at the Command and General Staff College in the Department of Joint, International, and Multinational Operations. Following this assignment, the Army selected Colonel Hartunian as one of 11 officers to attend the first cohort of the Advanced Strategic Planning and Policy Program (ASP3) through which he pursued a PhD in Public Administration at the University of Kansas. Upon completion of his coursework, Colonel Hartunian was assigned as the Chief Strategist at the National Counterterrorism Center’s Directorate of Strategic and Operational Planning. After completing his PhD dissertation, Colonel Hartunian moved to Jerusalem, Israel to assume duties as the Director of Strategy, Plans, and Assessments for the U.S. Security Coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority (USSC). Colonel Hartunian most recently served as the Eighth U.S. Army's Assistant Chief of Staff, G5, in the Republic of Korea.

Colonel Hartunian’s awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), Meritorious Service Medals (2OLC), the NATO Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.

Colonel Hartunian and his wife Kyla have three children, Asher, Charlie, and Roman.
