Dr. James D. Scudieri

Senior Research Historian at USAWC

Dr. James D. Scudieri is the Senior Research Historian at the U.S. Army War College’s Strategic Studies Institute (SSI). He served as the Senior Research Historian at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC), Carlisle, PA from August 2020 to December 2021. He was the Chief of the Military History Institute from August 2017 to August 2020. He was previously the Acting Chief of the Military History Institute since May 2016, and Senior Historian since November 2015. He began his Army experience with a commission from St. Peter’s College ROTC in 1978 and entered active duty in 1983, after Educational Delay, in the Ordnance Corps, transitioning to the Logistics Corps in 2008. He is a graduate of the Ordnance Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff College, the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) and the U.S. Army War College and Advanced Strategic Arts Program (ASAP). He completed thirty years of active duty service in 2013, including assignments in the USA, Korea, and Germany. He was the Modularity Coordination Cell (MCC) Director, Transformation to Modular Force, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell, KY in 2004-5. He is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).

His command assignments include: 18 months as Commander, D Company, 703rd Main Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), Kitzingen, Germany (1987-88); 24 months as Commander, 710th Main Support Battalion, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, NY (2000-2002); and 24 months as Commander, 101st Sustainment Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, KY (2005-7).

He served ten of thirty years in military education, including Instructor and Assistant Professor, Department of History, U. S. Military Academy, West Point, NY (1989-93); Faculty Instructor in the Department of Military Strategy, Planning, and Operations (DMSPO); Chairman, Department of Academic Affairs (DAA); and Deputy Dean, U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA. (2007-13). He also served as a civilian Professor of Theater Planning in DMSPO (2013-14). He is currently an Associate Professor in the U.S. Army War College.

His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with 1 OLC, the Meritorious Service Medal with 4 OLC, the Army Commendation Medal with 1 OLC, and the Army Achievement Medal.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Saint Peter’s College, now University (1978); a Master of Arts degree in History from Hunter College, City University of New York (1980); a Master of Military Art and Science degree from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (1995); and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in History from the Graduate School and University Center, City University of New York (1993).
