COL Michael B. Long

Director, China Landpower Studies Center

FA 59 (Army Strategy); Basic Branch: Aviation

COL Michael Long began his service as an enlisted artilleryman from 1996 to 2000. He commissioned from LSU ROTC as a distinguished graduate into Army Aviation in May 2001.

His previous assignments include: serving as Air Cav Platoon Leader in Baghdad, Iraq during OIF I; Assistant Aviation BDE S3 in Hanu, Germany; Aviation Battle CPT for Task Force Quake in Islamabad, Pakistan; CIG Planner at Army Central CMD in Ft McPherson, GA; S3 & XO for the Special Mission Wing in Kabul, Afghanistan; Strategy Branch Chief for Army South in Ft Sam Houston, Texas; InterAgency Fellowship at Department of Homeland Security in Washington DC; Strategy Division Chief for Army North in Ft Sam Houston, Texas; Joint Military Interagency Operations instructor at the Command & General Staff College in Ft Leavenworth, KS; and Assistant Chief of Staff and G5 for 8th Army in Camp Humphreys, South Korea, and is currently the Director of the China Landpower Studies Center at the Strategic Studies Institute with the Army War College.

His education includes: Bachelor of Science in Geography from LSU; Master of Arts in International Strategic Studies from National Defense University; Master of Arts in Military Art & Science from SAMS; Master of Arts in Strategic Studies from the Naval War College where he was hand-selected for the Advanced Strategy Program and led the year-long project on the Taiwan Problem set. Additionally, COL Long is a graduate of the Aviation Officer Basic Course, Aviation CPT’s Career Course, Red Team Leader Course, and Naval War College. COL Long is also an InterAgency Fellow.

COL Long is a Combat Veteran. As a rated Aviator, he has flown hundreds of combat missions in both an OH-58 Kiowa Warrior and Mi-17 Hip during his three combat tours (1x AFG & 2x Iraq).

COL Long’s military awards and decorations include: Legion of Merrit, Bronze Star (2), Air Medal (2); Meritorious Service Medal (3); Joint Service Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medals (3); Army Achievement Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation; Presidential Unit Citation; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Korean Defense Service Medal; Overseas Service Ribbon (5); NATO Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Combat Action Badge; Army Aviation Wings; Airborne Wings; and the Gold German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge.

COL Mike Long is a Louisiana native and married to the talented and lovely Brianne Long.
