Dr. Jacob A. Stoil, Research Professor of Middle East Security Studies at the US Army War College Strategic Studies Institute, and Chair of Applied History at the Modern War Institute, as well as Trustee of the U.S. Commission on Military History. Previously, he served as a Senior Fellow of the 40th Infantry Urban Warfare Center as well as an Associate Professor of Military History at the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). He also co-founded the International Working Group on Subterranean Warfare. Dr. Stoil’s specializes in applying lessons and understandings from military history to the contemporary and future operational and strategic environment, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practitioner focused solutions.
Jacob holds a doctorate in History from Oxford which focused on international military and SOF cooperation with indigenous forces in the Middle East and Horn of Africa, as well as an MA in History of Warfare and a BA in War Studies from King’s College London. Dr. Stoil has well over a decade of experience conducting research on the Israeli military and the broader Middle East.
As part of his role as Research Professor of Middle East Security, Dr. Stoil provides advice, analysis, and education to a number of commands and staffs. Dr. Stoil was awarded the Department of the Army Civilian Meritorious Service Medal for his work in support of the 40th ID Task Force SPARTAN rotation which coincided with the OCT 7th attacks. Dr. Stoil also served as subject matter expert on the lessons coming from conflicts in the Middle East in support of the Center for Army Lessons Learned.
Dr. Stoil developed a project to capture Israeli medical lessons which included field research in Israel learned in cooperation with 68th TMC which will soon be published and since 2023 Dr. Stoil has led a small research team in conducting research on multinational and international security forces as well as their relevance to Gaza. Recently, Dr. Stoil has published a book chapter on irregular warfare in East Africa during the Second World War and a book chapter on the urban engagements during the October 7th attacks. He also published award winning academic journal articles in venues such as the International Journal of Military History, the British Journal of Military History, and Revue d’histoire. Dr. Stoil has been interviewed by and published with a wide variety of publication including the Washington Post, Times of Israel, Newsweek, and War on the Rocks among others. He has given lectures on the Middle East and military history in universities across three continents including University of Haifa, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Georgetown, and Oxford.
